Police News.- A man named Arrup was brought up to the police office on Tuesday last, charged with being an idle and disorderly person. It appears Arrup was shewing off sleight of hand tricks at the Victoria Inn, on Monday night last, when the attention of the chief constable was attracted by the noise occasioned by his (Arrup's) evolutions. Our worthy chief, on arriving at the door of the house, found Mr. A. in a violent altercation with a lady of whom he had borrowed 5s., and which he had forgotten to return. On questioning him as to where he lodged, he said at the Victoria Inn: this the landlady indignantly denied, which induced Mr. Holt to take the man into custody, and on being brought before the bench on the following morning, he to all appearance was labouring under great and violent nervous affection, which was evidently put on for the occasion. Notwithstanding his tricks, he was eventually sentenced to one month's hard labour in her Majesty's gaol.
